How do you become a fund finance and accounting?

KnowQuant research deskUpdated 1 September 2026Method 2026.1

Short answer

Firms hiring finance professionals recruit from qualified accountants from audit or industry, fund administrators moving in-house, product control from investment banks, and screen against Fund accounting, Treasury and financing, Tax structure.

The entry band is Analyst at 0-2 years of experience, paying $100k to $155k total in New York.

The full skill list firms test for is Fund accounting, Treasury and financing, Tax structure, Financial control, Expense allocation, Excel and SQL. Interview loops are discipline specific: prepare for this role rather than for quantitative finance in general.

Books, treasury and the cost of carry is the shorthand, but the work varies materially by firm type. Compare the loops on the firm profiles before choosing where to apply.

Methodology

Figures are expressed as annual total compensation (base salary plus expected performance bonus) in the reference market's local currency, converted from a US dollar base. They describe typical market ranges rather than any individual offer, and exclude sign-on payments, deferred equity and carried interest. Portfolio-manager figures reflect formulaic profit-share arrangements and are therefore far more dispersed than any other role.

Modelled bands describe the market, not an individual offer. Where an employer states pay, the stated figure is used and labelled as such.
