Getting a quant job without a finance background

The field recruits outside itself on purpose

Firms are buying reasoning under uncertainty and the ability to build things that work. Those skills are produced in physics departments, statistics groups and software teams at least as reliably as in finance programmes.

What transfers cleanly

• Experimental design and the instinct to distrust your own result.
• Handling messy, high-volume data.
• Numerical methods and simulation.
• Production software discipline, if you come from engineering.

What does not transfer

• Market microstructure: how orders actually interact with a venue.
• Instrument mechanics: what a future, an option or a swap does in practice.
• The vocabulary, which will slow you down in interviews before it slows you down at work.

Closing the gap efficiently

Learn microstructure and instrument mechanics to interview depth — enough to reason about them, not enough to teach them. Then build one project on real market data end to end. That project is what converts an unfamiliar CV into a conversation.

Where the door is widest

Quant development and engineering seats are the most open to outsiders, because the software bar is objective and the finance can be absorbed. Research seats are next. Trading seats are the hardest cold entry without a referral or an internship.
