What a quant trader actually does
KnowQaunt research · 2 February 2026
What does a quant trader do?
A quant trader owns live risk in a systematic framework: monitoring and adjusting automated strategies, managing exposure, handling market events the models did not anticipate, and improving the parameters and logic that drive execution. It is a decision-making seat rather than a purely analytical one, and performance is measured directly against P&L.
It is a risk seat
The word "quant" makes people picture research. A quant trading seat is closer to operating a complex machine that is currently moving: watching what it does, understanding why, and intervening when reality departs from the assumptions.
A representative day
Pre-open checks on positions, exposures and system health. Through the session, monitoring strategy behaviour against expectation and handling anything unusual — a data feed problem, an unexpected news event, a venue outage. After the close, reconciliation, post-mortems on anything that surprised you, and work on the improvements that come out of it.
What firms screen for
Speed and accuracy under pressure, comfort with probability, the temperament to act on incomplete information, and the discipline to size risk consistently. Mental arithmetic tests are common precisely because they proxy for the first of those.
How it differs from research
Researchers are judged on whether an idea holds up. Traders are judged on the money. The feedback is faster, more public and less forgiving.
Pay
P&L-attributable and therefore variable. In good years this is among the best-paid seats in the market; in bad years the variance is real. Ask how the bonus has actually paid at your level over the last three years.
