What does the DRW quant interview involve?

The DRW quant loop runs 3 stages: screen, technical, on-site. It tests probability, mental maths, market making, statistics above finance knowledge, and it is run across New York, London, Chicago, Singapore, Amsterdam, Greenwich / Stamford, Toronto. The questions below are ours, written to rehearse the same reasoning.

What DRW publishes about its hiring

DRW publishes a graduate process built around a timed at-home technical challenge and a roughly 45-minute phone interview with a developer, trader or researcher, and says the process can differ by role. Checked against the firm's own pages on 18 October 2026.

Verified: stated by the firm

  • Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and only a recent resume is required. [DRW, Graduates]
  • The technical challenge is completed at home under timed conditions: quantitative (probability and logic) for trader and researcher roles, coding for developer roles. [DRW, Graduates]
  • Software developer assessments run on Codility and assess both correctness and performance. [DRW, Preparing for our technical challenge]
  • Phone interviews take about 45 minutes, are held on weekdays, and cover both technical and behavioural questions, with detailed questions on everything on the resume. [DRW, Acing your phone interview]
  • DRW says the recruitment process may be slightly different for each candidate. [DRW, Graduates]
  • The internship runs for ten weeks. [DRW, Interns]

Official process: Graduates

  1. Resume application
  2. Timed technical challenge (quant or coding)
  3. Phone/Zoom interview (about 45 minutes)
  4. Further interviews with the team

Estimate: our modelling and compilation

  • The 3-stage loop below is compiled from public sources and candidate reports, not published by DRW as a single sequence.
  • Modelled mid-level total compensation, Quant Researcher: about $470k USD. A KnowQuant estimate, not an employer figure.
  • Modelled mid-level total compensation, Quant Trader: about $480k USD. A KnowQuant estimate, not an employer figure.
  • Modelled mid-level total compensation, HFT / Low-Latency Engineer: about $450k USD. A KnowQuant estimate, not an employer figure.
  • The 23 practice questions are written by KnowQuant to rehearse the reasoning; they are not DRW's questions.

Not stated by the firm

  • - Number of final-round interviews
  • - Process for experienced hires

The loop as candidates report it (compiled, not official)

Each round answers the question candidates actually ask, then points at the round that follows it.

  1. Stage 1Screen

What happens in the screen at DRW?

Background and motivation. It is stage 1 of 3 in the DRW loop, and candidates who clear it move to the technical.

    Next step: Technical
  2. Stage 2Technical

What happens in the technical at DRW?

Probability and programming, weighted to the specific desk. It is stage 2 of 3 in the DRW loop, and candidates who clear it move to the on-site.

    Next step: On-site
  3. Stage 3On-site

What happens in the on-site at DRW?

Desk interviews and scenario discussion. It is stage 3 of 3 in the DRW loop and it is the final decision point.

DRW interview questions by city

The same loop, read against the local market: what the desk hires for, how the round is run there, and what a passed loop pays in the local currency.

Questions candidates ask about DRW

How many interview stages does DRW run?

3 published stages: screen, technical, on-site. The sequence is the same across every office we track.

What topics does the DRW quant interview test?

Mainly probability, mental maths, market making, statistics. DRW hires for 4 quant families, so the technical rounds are weighted to the role rather than to finance knowledge.

How hard is the DRW quant interview?

Hard by market standards. Our practice set for this loop runs to 23 questions, sorted with the hardest first, and the backgrounds that clear the bar are typically mathematics and engineering and trading backgrounds.

What does DRW pay after a passed loop?

DRW benchmarks at roughly 112% of the market figure for the same role and seniority. Published ranges are held per role, seniority and market in the local currency.

Where does DRW hire quants?

New York, London, Chicago, Singapore, Amsterdam, Greenwich / Stamford, Toronto. Each market carries its own benchmark in the local currency.

Are these real DRW interview questions?

No. Stage detail is compiled from public sources and candidate reports and labelled as such. Every question is written originally for this platform to rehearse the same reasoning, so nothing here republishes a firm's own question bank.

Methodology

Figures are expressed as annual total compensation (base salary plus expected performance bonus) in the reference market's local currency, converted from a US dollar base. They describe typical market ranges rather than any individual offer, and exclude sign-on payments, deferred equity and carried interest. Portfolio-manager figures reflect formulaic profit-share arrangements and are therefore far more dispersed than any other role.
